Background of the Study
Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that has significant physical, psychological, and social consequences for individuals and communities. In Taraba State, domestic violence affects a substantial proportion of the population, often remaining hidden due to cultural taboos and social stigma. Victims of domestic violence face not only immediate injuries but also long-term health complications, including mental health disorders, chronic pain, and reproductive health issues. Previous studies indicate that domestic violence is associated with increased rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as adverse reproductive outcomes (Hassan, 2023; Omar, 2024). Despite governmental and non-governmental efforts to address domestic violence, many incidents go unreported, and support services are insufficiently equipped to handle the complexity of cases. This study aims to assess the prevalence of domestic violence in Taraba State and examine its health consequences by combining quantitative surveys, healthcare data analysis, and qualitative interviews with survivors and service providers. The goal is to provide a comprehensive picture of the burden of domestic violence and inform the development of targeted interventions and support systems.
Statement of the Problem
Domestic violence in Taraba State remains a critical public health and social issue, with many victims suffering from both immediate and long-term health consequences. Underreporting, cultural norms that tolerate violence, and limited access to support services compound the problem. Women, in particular, face increased risks of physical injuries, mental health disorders, and reproductive complications as a result of abuse. The current response mechanisms are inadequate to address the multi-dimensional impact of domestic violence. Furthermore, the lack of reliable data on the prevalence and health impacts of domestic violence hinders the development of effective policies and interventions. This study seeks to address these gaps by systematically investigating the prevalence of domestic violence and its associated health consequences in Taraba State, providing evidence for strengthening support services and policy responses.
Objectives of the Study
1. To determine the prevalence of domestic violence in selected communities of Taraba State.
2. To assess the physical and psychological health consequences of domestic violence on victims.
3. To recommend interventions for prevention and improved support for survivors.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of domestic violence in Taraba State?
2. What are the primary health consequences experienced by victims of domestic violence?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce domestic violence and support survivors?
Research Hypotheses
1. Higher rates of domestic violence are significantly associated with increased physical and mental health problems.
2. Victims of domestic violence exhibit higher levels of psychological distress compared to non-victims.
3. Integrated support services will improve health outcomes for survivors.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on rural and urban communities in Taraba State. Data will be collected through household surveys, interviews with survivors, and health facility record analysis. Limitations include sensitivity of the topic and potential underreporting due to stigma.
